This is the setup of In the novel 2001 A Space Odyssey("2001" is written from now on),it was changed to "four million years ago" with "2001" of the movie.

In other words, with "2001" of the movie, the destination of Discovery is changed from "the Saturn" to "Jupiter." then,the generation of the surface of the moon monolith was changed before " three million years ago" to "four million years ago", too.

As for "the Saturn (ring)" and "before three million years ago (the surface of the moon monolith)", one side is the other basis. Therefore,as for the change to the change to "Jupiter (???)" and "before four million years ago (the surface of the moon monolith)" it can be interpreted when one side is the other basis in the same way.

What kind of meaning is there in this difference in "a million years"? If, that difference in "a million years".
